Rocket “The avalanche dog” came to visit

The tamariki have been learning all about dog safety and how to be kind and caring. After various visits from our whānaus best friends, the tamariki broadened their learning by asking about avalanches after some of the children had heard the bombs being dropped at Treble Cone. After exploring what an avalanche was, we talked about the dogs that save you if you get stuck in the snow.

“I wonder if we could meet an avalanche dog? “

“Yes, yes, please… was the reply”,

so we organised a visit from Matt & Rocket who are part of the team at Aspiring Avalanche dogs.

Matt  is Rockets owner and trainer. We were given a demonstration of the equipment used in an avalanche. The tamariki were fascinated with the special parachute Matt wears in case he is ever caught in an avalanche.  It was amazing to watch it inflate but very noisy.  Most of the tamariki asked questions and enjoyed patting Rocket (although she did have a good sniff of everyone when she arrived).  Some were lucky enough to receive a Rocket kiss. The tamariki were so responsible, listened extremely well and have continued to talk and ask questions.   I think we might have to email Matt and Rocket !!

Coincidentally they were called to an avalanche at Remarkables skifield that afternoon! We are very fortunate to have this very dedicated bunch of volunteers involved in our area. Aspiring Avalanche dogs is a non-profit registered charity. To find out more click here.
