Aspiring Beginnings Early Learning Centre is getting out their mixing bowls, popping on their aprons and whipping up some puppy-shaped bikkies for the annual Blind Foundation Red Puppy Bikkie Day.

Red Puppy Bikkie Day, now in its fourth year, raises funds to support Blind Foundation Guide Dogs.

The Aspiring Beginnings Early Learning Centre will be baking puppy shaped bikkies to sell on Monday 9th June 2014.

Blind Foundation chief executive, Sandra Budd, says Blind Foundation Guide Dogs red puppies-in-training are working hard to one day be the eyes of New Zealanders who are blind or have low vision.

“Raising guide dogs requires a staggering amount of time, effort and money. We appreciate the tremendous fundraising support and efforts of schools, clubs, day cares and work places around the country so New Zealanders who are blind or have low vision can enjoy the freedom and independence a guide dog offers,” she says.

About the Bind Foundation

  • The Blind Foundation is the country’s main provider of sight loss services to New Zealanders who are blind or have low vision.
  • The Blind Foundation has more than 11,700 clients who are blind or have low vision nationwide.
  • Every day an average of three New Zealanders sign up as members of the Blind Foundation.
  • Blind Foundation puppies in training are identified by their bright red coats and the average working life of a guide dog is eight to 10 years.

  • The Blind Foundation receives no government funding for Guide Dog Services so your support of the Red Puppy Bikkie Day will help New Zealanders who are blind or have low vision live a full and independent life.
  • Blind Foundation Guide Dogs was established in South Auckland in 1973
  • Blind Foundation guide dogs give people who are blind or have low vision independence and confidence.
  • Blind Foundation guide dogs are taught to guide people around hazards, negotiate traffic, locate common destinations and travel on public transport.
  • Blind Foundation puppies are identified by their bright red coats and the average working life of a guide dog is 8 to 10 years.
  • The average time spent waiting for a Blind Foundation guide dog is around 12 months, but it can take longer if people have specific needs.
  • Blind Foundation Guide Dogs aim to graduate 45 new teams each year – some to replace guide dogs who have retired or been withdrawn, others go to blind people who have not had a guide dog before.
  • We breed around 120 pups each year
